ATLANTA – State Representative Sandra Scott (D-Rex) recently introduced House Bill 40, which would require local school systems to conduct screenings for dyslexia.
“House Bill 40 is just one step we must take to support children that struggle with dyslexia,” said Rep. Scott. “It is critical that our educators and administrators identify dyslexia in children early so that we can provide them with the necessary tools to succeed in school.”
The proposed legislation would require local school systems to conduct dyslexia screenings for students in kindergarten through second grade. HB 40 would also allow teachers to request screens for students in grades three through 12. The required screenings would include various tests that would examine phonological awareness, sound symbol recognition, alphabet knowledge and other skills impacted by dyslexia.
The bill would also require the State School Superintendent to employ a dyslexia consultant to assist the Department of Education, and it would create a clear definition of dyslexia for Georgia Code.
