ATLANTA – State Representative Jason Shaw (R-Lakeland) recently received the 2013 Legislator of the Year Award from The Georgia State Firefighters’ Association (GSFA) and the Georgia Association of Fire Chiefs (GAFC). The award is given every year to the legislator who goes above and beyond in his or her role to support Georgia fire service.
“I am so very proud to be recognized by GSFA and GAFC as the Legislator of the Year,” said Rep. Shaw. “These men and women are heroes in our communities and it is important that we continue to support the important work that they do.”
During the 2013 legislative session, Rep. Shaw introduced House Bill 88, which would exempt volunteer firefighters from paying the renewal fee for class E & F drivers’ licenses. Georgia has a large volunteer population and most receive no compensation for their service.
“Rep. Shaw’s efforts mean a lot to fire service and especially to our volunteers,” said Lanier Swafford, President of the GSFA.
Robert Singletary, President of the GAFC said, “We applaud Rep. Shaw for supporting Georgia’s volunteer firefighters.”
Representative Jason Shaw represents the citizens of District 176, which includes all of Atkinson and Lanier counties, and portions of Lowndes, and Ware counties. He was elected into the House of Representatives in 2010 and currently serves as the Vice Chairman on the Insurance Committee. He also serves on the Economic Development & Tourism, Game, Fish, & Parks, and Small Business Development committees.
