ATLANTA – State Representative Shea Roberts (D-Atlanta) today announced that she has selected Tamara Carerra as a recipient of the Yellow Rose/Nikki T. Randall Servant Leadership Award. Rep. Roberts will present Carerra with the award on Friday, March 26, 2021, at 11:15 a.m. at the Community Assistance Center Thrift Store (8607 Roswell Road) in Sandy Springs.
“Tamera Carerra is a visionary and strategic thinker who has led by example to establish organizational excellence and implement meaningful programs in Georgia,” said Rep. Roberts. “Since the start of the pandemic, Tamera and her team at the Community Assistance Center have focused on serving families and individuals who have been hit the hardest by loss of income due to the economic crisis. Her leadership during the pandemic and outstanding service to our community makes her the perfect recipient for this award. Tamara’s contributions to our Sandy Springs community are immeasurable, and all will feel her absence as she transitions into retirement this year.”
Tamara Carrera was born in Ecuador and came to the U.S. at 17 years old. She holds a Masters of Business Administration in nonprofit management from Boston University, and she has served on several boards of directors throughout her career. Since 1997, she has served as the chief executive officer of the Community Assistance Center (CAC), and under her leadership, the CAC has become a model of community partnership in preventing homelessness, reducing hunger and promoting self-sufficiency for those in need. In late 2020, Tamara announced that she would be retiring from the CAC to move closer to her children who live out of state.
This award was created in honor of former State Representative Nikki T. Randall, who became the first African American female elected to the Georgia General Assembly. Former Rep. Randall served as chair of the Georgia Legislative Women’s Caucus, and every year during Women’s History Month, this caucus recognizes outstanding women in Georgia who exemplify the leadership and inspiration embodied by former Rep. Randall.
Rep. Roberts also introduced House Resolution 384 to honor Carerra, which can be viewed here.
Representative Shea Roberts represents the citizens of District 52, which includes portion of Fulton County. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2020 and currently serves on the Governmental Affairs, State Planning & Community Affairs and Science and Technology committees.
