ATLANTA—State Representative Lynn Smith (R–Newnan) joined school administration and local officials Tuesday to celebrate the opening of the University of West Georgia Campus in Newnan. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at their new facility which was converted from the old Newnan Hospital.

“I’ve enjoyed being a part of the transformation of the revered Newnan Hospital into a stellar institution of learning-the University of West Georgia-Newnan campus,” said Rep. Smith. “It’s amazing that despite all the construction, the original character of the building was maintained. Now we still have a beautiful northern portal into Newnan whose purpose has changed from healing our bodies to growing our minds.”

The project broke ground in September of 2014 with the university’s current satellite campus accommodating 500 students. With this new facility, they anticipate that number to grow to over 3,000 students, offering programs in nursing, education, and business. The building is set to open for faculty and staff to move in today, May 15th, and the first official classes will begin with the summer session on June 6th.

Representative Lynn Smith represents the citizens of District 70, which includes portions of Carroll and Coweta counties. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 1996, and currently serves as the Chairman of the Natural Resources & Environment Committee. She also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government and the Legislative & Congressional Reapportionment and Rules committees.
