Rep. Spencer Commends Georgia Hunting and Fishing Federation for Endorsing Spaceport Camden

ATLANTA – State Representative Jason Spencer (R-Woodbine) today commended the Georgia Hunting and Fishing Federation (GHFF) for their endorsement of the Spaceport Camden project, a launch site and spaceport in Camden County, Georgia. Rep. Spencer sponsored House Bill 1, the Georgia Spaceflight Act (GSA), legislation designed to define procedures for space flight activity in Georgia.

“I want to thank the leadership team and members of the Georgia Hunting and Fishing Federation for their support of the Spaceport Camden project,” said Rep. Spencer. “GHFF is a prominent voice in the hunting and fishing community in Georgia, and they represent true conservationists and sportsmen in our state. Receiving their endorsement on this initiative speaks volumes. Like the wildlife refuge centers that are near both the Kennedy Space Center and the NASA Space Center in Wallops Island, Virginia, the Spaceport Camden project sits on an 11,000 acre site where most of the land is expected to be used as a nature conservation zone, proving that nature and science can co-exist. I am grateful that coastal Georgia’s hunting and fishing community sees the positive effects that this economic development project could have on our community and our state.”

The GSA is modeled after the Texas law, Limited Liability for Space Flight Activities, and would define procedures for space flight activity in Georgia. The bill would limit a willing space flight participant’s ability to sue for damages related to space flight activities occurring in this state if the willing participant has given written informed consent. Additionally, the GSA would not immune space flight operators against injuries suffered by non-consenting third parties affected by space flight activity. This language is the foundation of the bill and is an industry standard that is used in all other “space friendly” states.
