ATLANTA – State Representative Steven Sainz (R – St. Marys) applauds the Senate passage by substitute of House Bill 266, legislation that would provide a full exemption from state income tax on all military retirement benefits, which seeks to ensure that Georgia remains one of the most veteran-friendly states in the nation.
“The Senate substitute to HB 266 further enhances the tax deduction for veterans, marking a bipartisan win for the courageous men and women who have served our country,” said Rep. Sainz. “By removing the income tax on military retirement pay, we are not only showing our appreciation for veterans but also bolstering Georgia’s workforce, economy and communities. We encourage any interested veterans or veterans’ advocacy groups to reach out to discuss how they can best contribute to this important cause.”
The bill, which now awaits further action by the House to either agree or disagree to the Senate’s substitute, aims to make Georgia more competitive in attracting and retaining highly skilled veterans who bring valuable experience to the workforce. This tax exemption would encourage military retirees to settle in Georgia, contributing to local businesses, workforce development and economic growth – particularly in Coastal Georgia, home to military installations like Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay.
“This legislation is more than just tax relief – it’s a strategic investment in our communities,” added Rep. Sainz. “Veterans bring leadership, discipline and expertise that benefit industries across Georgia, from logistics and cybersecurity to healthcare and manufacturing.”
HB 266 would also enhance support for military and veteran families to ease financial burdens and help them transition into civilian life. Coastal Georgia, with its defined military presence, would stand to benefit from this tax relief as military retirees often invest in local businesses, school and communities.
With unanimous support in the House, the final passage of HB 266 would exemplify the power of bipartisan collaboration to deliver meaningful results for those who have served. Rep. Sainz remains committed to working with colleagues in both Chambers to ensure the bill’s final passage and implementation by 2026.
If the House agrees to the Senate substitute to HB 266, the bill would be sent to the governor’s desk for signature, making it law.
