Rep. Stovall Named to House and NCSL Committees

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives’ Committee on Assignments named State Representative Valencia Stovall (D-Forest Park) to the Economic Development & Tourism, Education, Interstate Cooperation and Small Business Development committees. Rep. Stovall will also serve as the Vice Chair of both the House Education Subcommittee on Early Learning and K-12 Education and the House medical cannabis working group.

“Since being elected in 2012, I have desired to bring my personal and business experiences to my service as a legislator,” said Rep. Stovall. “Serving on these committees has afforded me this unique opportunity, especially in the leadership roles as Vice Chair of the medical cannabis working group and Vice Chair of a subcommittee on the Education Committee.”

In addition to receiving her committee assignments, House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) recently named Rep. Stovall to the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Education Committee.

“I am humbled and appreciative of the recent appointment by Speaker Ralston to serve on the NCSL’s Education Committee,” said Rep. Stovall. “This national organization is well respected for its in depth work on national issues like education. I look forward to sharing our successes in Georgia while learning from others.”

According to NCSL, the Education Committee has jurisdiction over P-20 education issues, including early childhood education, K-12 reform efforts, higher education, the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the Higher Education Act, school violence, special education, teachers, school finance and adequacy.

The Education Committee is one of NCSL’s nine Standing Committees. These Standing Committees which provides a forum for the discussion of major issues facing the states and allows legislators to learn from the experiences of other states.

The appointment is for a two-year term concurrent with Rep. Stovall’s service as a member of the Georgia House of Representatives.

NCSL is a bipartisan organization that serves legislators and staffs from across the nation. It provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues in addition to advocating for the interests of the states in the American federal system.
