ATLANTA — State Representative Valencia Stovall (D-Forest Park) today announced that House Bill 614, the Landon Dunson Act, was signed into law by Governor Nathan Deal on Tuesday, May 3, 2016. The Landon Dunson Act, authored by Rep. Stovall, will install video monitoring equipment in classrooms offering special education services for educational and safety purposes.
“It is a great day in Georgia for our most vulnerable students and their teachers with the signing of HB 614,” said Rep. Stovall. “It is my hope that school districts will understand the importance and the value of video cameras in these classrooms.”
The Landon Dunson Act will allow for the installation of video monitoring camera equipment in self-contained school classrooms that provide special education services for educational and safety purposes. Participation from local schools will be voluntary and only with the consent of the parents of the children in the classroom. Access to the footage will be strictly limited to school administrators for educational and safety monitoring purposes, as well as parents, law enforcement, and court officials upon subpoena. The new law will give the Department of Education final approval of the local school’s that choose to opt-in to the program, but each individual school will be responsible for providing their own video monitoring equipment. Rep. Stovall introduced the Landon Dunson Act in response to concerns of alleged abuse in classrooms that provide special education services.
