Rep. Stovall’s Public Comment Legislation Passes House

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives unanimously passed House Bill 493, sponsored by State Representative Valencia Stovall (D-Forest Park), on Monday, Feb. 26, 2018. This bill would require public commentary to be included in video recordings of meetings of local governing authorities.

“The passage of HB 493 by the House is one step closer in increasing transparency and fairness in government for Georgia’s citizens,” said Rep. Stovall. “This bill would require public comments to be included when local government meetings are video recorded. There is a loop hole in the current law that allows public commentary to be omitted from these recordings, and this legislation would close that gap.”

House Bill 493 would require video recordings of county governing authority, municipal governing authority or board of education meetings to include the public commentary portion of the meeting.

House Bill 493 will now go to the Senate for consideration.
