ATLANTA – State Representative Tanya Miller(D-Atlanta) today issued the following statement condemning the racially motivated shooting in Jacksonville, Fl.:
“This weekend, our nation was again reminded of the fragility of life and the toxicity of white supremacy. Three lives were lost in Jacksonville as a result of the ever-intensifying threat of racial hatred and gun violence in our country. My heart goes out to the victims’ families and the entire community affected by this devastating event.
“It is imperative that we remain faithful to the principle that racial violence has no place in our society. While it is fair for public leaders to have reasoned debates on policy issues, it is equally vital to maintain a respectful dialogue that encourages cooperation and remains committed to the idea that we are all Americans.
“We will continue to call for a renewed focus on common-sense gun legislation that ensures the safety of all citizens. Additionally, fostering a society that values diversity, equity and inclusion can play a crucial role in preventing acts of hatred and violence. We must strive to create communities where every individual is treated with respect and dignity, no matter their race, as well as communities where we teach our children the truth about the dark chapters of our history so that we are not doomed to repeat it.
“We urge all leaders, regardless of political affiliation, to come together to denounce racially motivated violence and to promote a spirit of American unity. Our nation deserves leadership that upholds our shared values, the rule of law and works toward a future where every person can feel safe and valued.
“In memory of the precious lives lost, let us remain steadfast and united against hatred and division. Together, we can build a better future for our country, one that reflects our shared values of truth, justice, equality and safety.”
Representative Tanya Miller represents the citizens of District 62, which includes portions of Fulton County. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 and currently serves on the Code Revision, Information and Audits and Judiciary Non-Civil committees.
