ATLANTA— State Representative Tonya Anderson (D-Lithonia) was recently recognized as one of the 2014 Elected Women of Excellence Award winners by the National Foundation for Women Legislators.
“It is an honor to receive this esteemed award from the National Foundation of Women Legislators,” said Rep. Anderson. “I am proud to share this recognition with exceptional women across the country.”
Rep. Anderson’s award was presented at the Toast to the Women of Excellence ceremony at the Philadelphia Museum of Art during NFWL’s 2014 Annual Conference in November. A total of nineteen award winners were honored. The winners were nominated by their colleagues and constituents from their home states and then selected by NFWL board members.
“We are thrilled to acknowledge these women,” said NFWL Chair and New Jersey Senator, Diane Allen. “They showcase the strong leadership qualities, focused work ethic, and determination that we try to instill in young women across the nation, and deserve to be recognized for their tremendous efforts.”
According to NFWL, Rep. Anderson was selected for the award based on her long history of public service. She served on the local level from 2006-2011, and in 2012, became the State Representative for the newly formed District 92. In addition to her elected service, Anderson served in the USAF Reserves and currently serves on several boards and is actively engaged in the community. Rep. Anderson is also a minister in her local church and a certified Life Coach.
The Elected Women of Excellence awards were established in 2013 as part of NFWL’s 75th Anniversary Celebration in order to honor the hard work and dedication of women leaders from across the country. In all, NFWL has recognized 60 elected women from 37 states. The winners must be nominated by their colleagues and constituents from their home states before they are selected by NFWL board members.
The National Foundation for Women Legislators supports elected women from all levels of governance through annual education and networking events. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, NFWL does not take ideological positions on public policy issues, but rather serves as a forum for women legislators to be empowered through information and experience.
