ATLANTA – State Representative Trey Kelley (R-Cedartown) sponsored House Resolution 1536 which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the City of Aragon. The resolution was read before the House and adopted on February 21, 2014.
“I am proud to honor the rich heritage of the city of Aragon through House Resolution 1536,” said Rep. Kelley. “As we celebrate the city of Aragon’s centennial anniversary, I am extremely optimistic about the city’s bright future.”
The city of Aragon was founded in 1899 and was centered around the Aragon Mill, built in 1898 by Wolcott and Campbell of New York Mills. Various folktales about the city say that Aragon, which was incorporated on July 23, 1914, was named after the mineral aragonite that was mined nearby, while others claim it was named after the Aragon Hotel. The Aragon Mill remained in operation until it was destroyed by a fire in August, 2002. The city’s motto is “A Proud Past with a Promising Future.”
