Rep. Turner’s Legislation to Update Special Needs Scholarship Program Passes House

ATLANTA – The Georgia House of Representatives passed House Bill 759, sponsored by State Representative Scot Turner (R-Holly Springs), on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018, by a vote of 171-0. This measure would update the requirements for Georgia Special Needs Scholarship Program applicants.

“I’m proud that the House unanimously passed HB 759, which would guarantee educational opportunities for Georgians with special needs,” said Rep. Turner. “This measure would allow more students to qualify for an exceptional scholarship program, and I was proud to champion this legislation on behalf of Georgians living with special needs and their families. Thank you to my House colleagues for your approval of this measure, and I hope the Senate will favorably consider HB 759.”

HB 759 would amend the Georgia Special Needs Scholarship Program for students who previously qualified for the scholarship by meeting all of the existing requirements for the program. One of the requirements to receive the scholarship is that the student must attend a traditional public school for a full school year. Once they meet all of the existing requirements, they would not have to return to the public school system to maintain their eligibility for the scholarship.

HB 759 will now go to the Senate for consideration. If passed by the Senate, HB 759 would require the governor’s signature in order to take effect.
