ATLANTA — State Representative Valencia Stovall (D-Forest Park) was recently selected as one of the first winners of the Women in Politics Making a Difference Award presented by the Women’s Legislative Network of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).
“I am honored to make history by being among the first recipients of this award from the Women’s Legislative Network of the NCSL,” said Rep. Stovall. “Recognizing the impact of women legislators across this country will encourage more women to be public servants.”
Representative Stovall was selected for the Women in Politics Making a Difference Award based on her leadership on economic development issues and for the creation of Educate Georgia, a two-day education summit at the Georgia State Capitol.
The Women in Politics Making a Difference Awards will recognize 16 outstanding female state legislators over the course of a year. Each season – spring, summer, fall, and winter – the NCSL Women’s Legislative Network will profile four women who are making their marks in their legislatures and communities to celebrate the nation’s outstanding female state legislators, beginning with the program’s first award winners for spring 2016.
“Speaking with Representative Valencia Stovall it is easy to see she is passionate about her community and a few targeted passions boil to the surface with vigor,” said Samantha Nuechterlein, staff coordinator for the NCSL Foundation and Member Outreach. “Her commitment to improving education for all students in Georgia, increasing job opportunities for local constituents and overall economic development in her community are all unwavering goals. She has a notable presence in the community, constantly engaging her constituents to keep them at the forefront of her work.”
The Women’s Legislative Network is an active organization dedicated to promoting the participation, empowerment, and leadership of women legislators. There are currently 1,809 women serving in state legislatures across the country. Every female legislator is a member of the network by virtue of her service, and the organization is governed by a bipartisan, regionally-balanced board of 15 directors.
