ATLANTA – State Representative Keisha Waites (D-Atlanta) will attend the Air Force Junior ROTC awards ceremony and present Military Scholarships to Forest Park High School AFJROTC cadets Joshua Apolinario, Angelica Marquez and Pilar Martinez-Vargas. Rep. Waites nominated the students for these scholarships and will present cadets Marquez and Martinez-Vargas with the Georgia Military Scholarship to attend the University of North Georgia and Cadet Apolinario with the State Service Scholarship to attend Georgia Military College at an awards ceremony on Wednesday, May 4 at Mundy’s Mill High School in Jonesboro.
“These students are excellent examples of the incredible talents we have in District 60, and I have such deep appreciation for all of their hard work,” said Rep. Waites. “Getting an education is crucial to success in life, and I know these individuals have a bright future ahead of them. I am honored to present them with these scholarships.”
The Georgia Military Scholarship being presented to cadets Marquez and Martinez-Vargas awards 42 scholarships annually, each totaling $70,000 over four years. The scholarship covers the cost of uniforms, tuition, books, fees, room, and board, as well as a monthly stipend. In addition to pursuing a bachelor’s degree from UNG, scholarship recipients will be commissioned as second lieutenants in the Georgia Army National Guard upon graduation.
Applicants must be accepted to the University of North Georgia, and are required to present a letter of recommendation from a sitting State Representative or State Senator. To qualify, applicants must also be a legal resident of Georgia, have a minimum 3.0 high school grade-point average, meet the physical and health standards for serving in the Georgia National Guard, and be a freshman entering the UNG Corps of Cadets.
The State Service Scholarship being presented to Cadet Apolinario awards up to 42 scholarships annually that cover the cost of uniforms, tuition, fees, room, and board, as well as a stipend for books and supplies. In addition to pursuing an associate’s degree from GMC, scholarship recipients will be enlisted in either the United State Army or the Air National Guard during their time at GMC and for an additional two years after.
Applicants must be accepted to Georgia Military College, and are required to present a letter of recommendation from a sitting State Representative or State Senator. To qualify, applicants must also be a legal resident of Georgia, have a minimum 2.5 high school grade-point average, meet the physical and health standards for serving in the Georgia National Guard, and be a freshman entering the GMC Corps of Cadets.
