ATLANTA – Today the Committee on Assignments, chaired by Speaker Glenn Richardson, announced the committee assignments for the 2009 – 2010 legislative sessions. Representative Howard Maxwell was appointed Chairman of the Retirement Committee and member of the Appropriations, Education, and Insurance Committees.
“I would like to say thank you to both the Committee on Assignments and the Speaker for allowing me to serve as Chairman of this committee. I appreciate their show of confidence in my ability and I look forward to the challenge,” said Rep. Maxwell. “I have served on the Retirement Committee for a total of 4 years, the last two years as Vice Chair. Through this experience, I have a better understanding of how the decisions made by this committee impact thousands of active and retired state employees. Georgia’s Public Retirement Systems are among the best in the country and as Chairman, my goal is to continue to work to maintain the fiscal soundness of each of the systems.”
The Committee on Assignments is chaired by the Speaker and includes several other members of House leadership. This committee is in charge of deciding House Floor seating, office, and committee assignments. The committee was first created in 2005 in an attempt to make a more open selection process.
“Congratulations to Representative Maxwell on his assignments and responsibilities as we start the 2009 Session,” said Speaker Glenn Richardson. “The assignments announced today represent the right balance of skills, leadership and experience to continue leading the House.”
