Representative Smith Appointed to Southern States Energy Board

ATLANTA – Georgia State Representative Lynn Smith (R- Newnan) has been appointed as an alternate representative to the Southern States Energy Board (SSEB). In this role, she will work with State Representative Harry Geisinger (R-Roswell) to promote and acquire funding for energy and environmental programs in Georgia.

“I’m honored to be appointed to this important board,” said Representative Smith. “During these tough economic times, it is important to find new ways to create jobs. The development of energy and environmental programs could do just that. As a member of the board, I feel that I will have an important role in the revitalization of the Georgia economy.”

The SSEB’s mission is to enhance economic development and quality of life in the south through innovations in energy and in environmental policies, programs and technologies. Last year, Georgia received over $7.6 million in benefits from its membership in SSEB. This included a Waste Isolation Pilot Plant subgrant of $2.3 million.

As a non-profit interstate compact organization, the SSEB is comprised of sixteen southern states and two territories: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia and West Virginia.

Each jurisdiction is represented by the governor and a legislator each from the House of Representatives and the Senate. The governor serves as the chair and legislators serve as vice-chairman and treasurer.

Representative Smith was appointed by former House Speaker Mark Burkhalter (R-Johns Creek).
