ATLANTA – Today, House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) praised State Representative Butch Parrish (R-Swainsboro), Chairman of the House Rules Committee, for his creation of the Subcommittee of Rules on Lawsuit Reform. This subcommittee is tasked with considering proposed legislation that addresses changes to Georgia’s legal environment—Senate Bill 68 and Senate Bill 69.

Speaker Jon Burns Unveils Comprehensive School Safety Plan

ATLANTA – Today, Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington), joined by Majority Leader Chuck Efstration (R-Mulberry), Representative Holt Persinger (R-Winder), Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith, Barrow County School System Superintendent Dr. Dallas LeDuff and the family of Coach Richard Aspinwall, unveiled his comprehensive school safety plan. This plan mandates statewide participation in a new student information sharing and safety database, requires threat assessment teams to be implemented in schools, requires schools to utilize an anonymous reporting app that meets certain standards, addresses physical security infrastructure needs, increases penalties for individuals who make terroristic threats and incentivizes responsible firearm ownership practices.

House Republican Caucus Elects Officers

ATLANTA – The House Republican Caucus met today to elect its leadership team for the 2025-2026 legislative term. During the meeting, House Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) was nominated by the caucus to serve a second term as the 75th Speaker of the House of Representatives, while House Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones (R-Milton) was also nominated to serve another term in her role.
