Representative Melvin Everson Appointed Vice-Chairman of Defense & Veterans Affairs Committee
ATLANTA – On January 15, the Committee on Assignments, chaired by Speaker Glenn Richardson, announced the committee assignments for the 2009 – 2010 legislative sessions. Representative Melvin Everson was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Defense & Veterans Affairs Committee and member of the Education, Insurance, Transportation, and Judiciary Non-Civil Committees.
Rep. Everson is a 23 year veteran of the U.S. Army/Reserve.
“It is an absolute honor and privilege to be placed by leadership to such an important position as Vice-Chairman of Defense & Veterans Affairs,” said Rep. Everson. “I am equally honored to be a continued member of the Education, Transportation, and Judiciary Non-Civil; and a first time member of the Insurance committee. I look forward to serving on all these committees as we address the challenges that await us.”
The Committee on Assignments is chaired by the Speaker and includes several other members of House leadership. This committee is in charge of deciding House Floor seating, office, and committee assignments. The committee was first created in 2005 in an attempt to make a more open selection process.
“Congratulations to Representative Everson on his assignments and responsibilities as we start the 2009 Session,” said Speaker Glenn Richardson. “The assignments announced today represent the right balance of skills, leadership and experience to continue leading the House.”
