Reps. Scott, Davis and Schofield Applaud State Funding Supporting Students’ Mental Health and Students in Poverty

ATLANTA – State Representatives Sandra G. Scott (D-Rex), Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain) and Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) recently applauded state funding that allocates $15 million for students living in poverty and $19.6 million for student mental health services. This funding for the Department of Education was included in the Fiscal Year 2026 budget (FY26), which took effect on July 1, 2025. These legislators also highlight House Bills 26 and 27, legislation they introduced during the 2025 legislative session that would support students’ mental health and support students living in poverty.

Every day in Georgia, patients enter operating rooms believing they will receive care that honors their dignity. They trust that our healthcare system will protect them, not violate their autonomy. Yet, across the country—and historically in Georgia—patients have undergone intimate breast, pelvic, rectal, prostate, urogenital or anal exams, while unconscious, without their explicit informed consent. This practice, often conducted for training purposes, has persisted quietly for decades.

GUEST EDITORIAL: Why Georgia’s Power Bill Investigation Must be Independent and Transparent

Electricity isn’t a luxury; it’s a necessity. Yet, for too many Georgians, what should be a straightforward utility bill has become a source of confusion and frustration. When I began examining my own Georgia Power bills, I discovered troubling inconsistencies between the fixed “budget billing” amount and the actual cost of electricity I used. That prompted me to call for an independent, third-party investigation into Georgia Power’s budget billing program, an issue now under formal review by the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC).
