ATLANTA – State Representatives Sandra Scott (D-Rex) and Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain) seek to recognize women veterans in honor of Women Veterans Day in Georgia, which took place on Sunday, June 12, 2022.
“As a former S.S.G. in the U.S. Army for five years, I salute all the women veterans in Georgia and around the world, including the Black women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion,” said Rep. Scott. “I also want to thank State Representative Sheila Jones for introducing House Resolution 978 to make this day possible for women veterans in Georgia. Every day we put on our uniforms, and we worked hard serving our country in trying conditions to accomplish our missions. It is an honor to be among the many Black women veterans who have proven what we can accomplish when we are given the chance to serve.”
“I commend Rep. Sheila Jones for sponsoring House Resolution 978 to recognize Women Veterans Day in Georgia,” said Rep. Davis. “I, along with many other women veterans, served our country with pride and courage. Remember, women veterans should be able to enjoy the same services, such as using special parking spaces, as their male veteran counterparts. As a registered nurse and U.S. Army nurse, I commend the nurses and other medical professionals that serve our country to defend the U.S. Constitution. Veterans are the true patriots.”
During the 2022 legislative session, State Representative Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta) introduced House Resolution 978 to recognize June 12, 2022, as Women Veterans Day in Georgia. This day seeks to honor the nearly 93,000 women veterans who serve in all branches of the U.S. military.
From 1945 through 1946, the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion served as an all-Black battalion of the Women’s Army Corps. Nicknamed the “Six Triple Eight,” the 6888th had 855 Black women, both enlisted and officers, and was led by Major Charity Adams. It was the only all-Black, all-female battalion sent overseas during World War II.
