ATLANTA – State Representatives Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain) and Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale) today celebrated Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s Founders Day during an afternoon order on the floor of the Georgia House of Representatives. This day commemorates the 22 young women who founded the sisterhood, promoted academic excellence and provided assistance to those in need.
“Today, we celebrate the Delta women committed to public service and helping their local communities,” said Rep. Davis. “Deltas are strong, enthusiastic and visionaries, and it was an honor to recognize their service with my House colleagues in the House Chamber.”
“I have been a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. for more than 47 years,” said Rep. Burnough. “I love being a member of this sisterhood where we support our community in the areas of education and social action, to name a few.”
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. The students founded the organization with the goal of promoting public service on the university’s campus. One of the newly found sorority’s first public acts was to participate in the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession. These African American women refused efforts to place them at the end of the processional behind the other suffrage marchers.
Additionally, Rep. Davis today announced that a group of state legislators will host Delta Day at the Georgia State Capitol on February 27, 2023. Details regarding this event will be forthcoming.
