ATLANTA – Today, Speaker of the House Jon Burns (R-Newington) and House Majority Whip James Burchett (R-Waycross) issued the following statement following the passing of Freedom, Georgia Southern University’s live bald eagle mascot:
“It’s a sad time for Eagle Nation as we mourn the unexpected loss of our beloved mascot, Freedom,” said Speaker Jon Burns. “He represented the very best of Georgia Southern, and we’re proud to have given him a home as a cherished member of the GSU family for over 20 years. Soar beyond, Freedom.”
“Freedom provided educational opportunities for those who visited him on campus, while instilling a sense of pride in our beloved Georgia Southern University at events around the state,” said Whip Burchett. “I join President Marrero, Coach Helton and Steve Hein, the Executive Director of the Georgia Southern Center for Wildlife Education, in mourning Freedom’s loss.”
A cherished member of the Georgia Southern University community since 2004, Freedom served as an ambassador for the University, wildlife and the nation. Freedom captivated many annually at Georgia Southern sporting events, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah, commencements and various community activities. Rescued after being found injured from a fall in a nest in Maitland, Florida, Freedom sustained a permanent beak injury that prevented his return to the wild. Since then, the Georgia Southern University Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q. Ball, Jr. Raptor Center have provided him with care, allowing visitors to learn about his journey and the importance of wildlife conservation.
