State Legislators Introduce Resolution for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Day at State Capitol

ATLANTA – State Representatives Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain), Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale), Sheila Jones (D-Atlanta), Edna Jackson (D-Savannah), Mekyah McQueen (D-Smyrna) and Terry Cummings (D-Mableton) recently introduced House Resolution 401, which recognizes Monday, March 3, 2025, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Day, also known as “Delta Day” at the Capitol. These legislators also issued the following statement:

“On this Delta Day at the Capitol, we honor the powerful legacy of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – a sisterhood built on service, leadership and advocacy. Since their historic participation in the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March, Deltas have remained at the forefront of social change, championing issues that uplift communities across Georgia and the nation. As we gather in unity, let us reaffirm our commitment to economic and educational development, international awareness, physical and mental health and political involvement – the pillars that continue to guide this dynamic sisterhood in its mission to create lasting impact. Let us honor the remarkable women who laid the foundation of our sisterhood and continue their legacy with pride and purpose.”

This resolution seeks to commemorate 112 years of service and the 22 young women who founded the sisterhood. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913, on the campus of Howard University in Washington D.C. The students founded the organization with the goal of promoting public service on the university’s campus. One of the newly found sorority’s first public acts was to participate in the 1913 Woman Suffrage Procession. These African American women refused efforts to place them at the end of the processional behind the other suffrage marchers.

Additionally, these legislators hosted a Morning Order to celebrate Delta Day on March 3rd.
