State Rep. Doug McKillip of Athens Joins House Republican Caucus
Leaves post as House Democratic Caucus Chairman

ATLANTA – State Representative Doug McKillip of Athens today announced that he will join the House Republican Caucus leaving the House Democratic Caucus and his position as caucus chairman.“Our state faces a number of critical issues which will require decisive action in the upcoming session,” said Rep. Doug McKillip.  “Many issues will directly impact Athens like funding for higher education, changes to the Hope Scholarship and planning for our future water needs.  I believe the citizens of District 115 deserve more than just to be a part of the conversation. They deserve a seat at the table during those important deliberations. By joining the House Republican Caucus, I can best represent my community and help move beyond partisanship and the divisiveness that will only prevent real progress at this critical time.”

With today’s announcement, the Georgia House of Representatives is comprised of 113 Republicans, 65 Democrats, and one independent.  One seat is also currently vacant due to the passing of Rep. Tony Sellier (R-Fort Valley).

“Rep. McKillip is a principled leader committed to putting the needs of his community before the interests of party,” said House Speaker David Ralston.  “He will be an important member of our team in the House as we prepare for the challenges we face in the upcoming legislative session.”

Rep. McKillip represents the citizens of District 115, which includes portions of Clarke County.  He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2006 and currently serves on the Appropriations, Industrial Relations, Intragovernmental Coordination, Judiciary and Natural Resources and Environment Committees.   Rep. McKillip was recently elected chairman of the House Democratic Caucus in November 2010 and previously served as deputy whip.
