ATLANTA – State Representatives Karla Drenner (D- Avondale Estates) and John Lunsford (R- McDonough) recently presented Broken Heart Ministries of Scottdale, Georgia, with keys to a home donated by the Walker and Gilmore families, owners of Walker Concrete.
Mrs. Annie Reid accepted the keys as founder of Broken Heart Ministries. With her long-standing ties and deep reach in the community, Mrs. Reid has been able to assist residents of the Scottdale community with basic needs, such as food, clothing and shelter. She also throws parties for senior citizens and weekend barbecues for everyone in the community. Her overwhelming service throughout DeKalb County and the Scottdale community has earned the title “matriarch of Scottdale.”
“I have worked with Mrs. Reid, her non-profit and her church ever since I was elected to be a state legislator almost a decade ago,” said Rep. Drenner. “She is an angel of light who brightens communities in which there is little light. I could not think of a better person to be a good steward of the great gift Rep. Lunsford offered.”
The donation is one of six homes given by the Walker and Gilmore families. Rep. Lunsford worked with the families and other Atlanta area legislators to find organizations to accept the six homes, valued at a total of $1.5 million. In addition to Broken Hearts Ministries: Henry for Children, Habitat for Humanity of DeKalb, Atlanta Bible Baptist Church and Community Bible Church also received donated homes.
“There is nothing more rewarding than brightening the faces of the people who work so hard to make a difference in our communities but who do not receive anything close to the gratitude we owe them all. This unique opportunity speaks to their dedication in a way that volumes of words cannot,” said Rep. Lunsford.
