ATLANTA – State Representative Sharon Beasley-Teague (D-Red Oak) and the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) awarded Darcy Farwell a $3,000 college scholarship at the 2016 NFWL Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. Rep. Beasley-Teague served as the mentoring legislator for Darcy Farwell and presented the award to Farwell at a luncheon on Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, during the conference.
“Darcy is a resilient young woman, and her diligent desire to learn is evident to all,” says Rep. Beasley-Teague. “Darcy’s humble leadership style is inspiring – she truly exhibits the NFWL’s core values. I am proud of her outstanding accomplishments, and I look forward to continuing in our mentorship.”
Farwell was selected as one of six national winners of the 19th Annual Bill of Rights Essay Scholarship Contest, presented by the National Rifle Association, a sponsoring partner of the NFWL.
Applicants were given four prompt options, all of which examined the topic of the 19th Amendment’s historical and modern significance. The essay topics asked students to further analyze the role of women in American politics, which led to a diverse array of responses from more than 100 students who applied for the scholarship. A selection committee judged each essay based upon the student’s understanding of the U.S. Constitution, historical research, insight, perspective, inspirational quality and meaningful personal connection.
Through annual educational and networking events, the NFWL supports elected women from all levels of governance. As a non-profit, non-partisan organization, the NFWL does not take ideological positions on public policy issues, but rather serves as a forum for women legislators to be empowered through information and experience.
