Rep. Burnough Encourages Residents to Remember Gold Star Mothers
ATLANTA – State Representative Rhonda Burnough (D-Riverdale) encourages residents in House District 77 to remember Georgia’s Gold Star Mothers on Sunday, September 26, 2021. The Gold Star Mothers program honors mothers of members of the U.S. Armed Forces who were killed in combat or as a result of combat.
“I encourage my constituents in House District 77 to remember the mothers whose children gave the ultimate sacrifice in the name of our democracy,” said Rep. Burnough. “This is an honor no parent wants. But, America’s incredible Gold Star Mothers continue to provide emotional support to military families in need even as they navigate their own grief. Americans should always be grateful to the men and women who gave their lives so that we could enjoy our freedom and the families whose lives have been forever changed. This Sunday, we will hold Gold Star Mothers in our hearts and prayers.”
In an effort to provide comfort and sympathy to mothers who lost their children to military service and care for hospitalized veterans, Grace Darling Siebold founded American Gold Star Mothers, Inc. after her son was killed in action during World War I. On June 23, 1936, a joint congressional resolution designated the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mother’s Day, which is proclaimed annually by each president. Former President Barack Obama amended the day to “Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day” in 2011.
Representative Rhonda Burnough represents the citizens of District 77, which includes portions of Clayton County. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2016 and currently serves on the Special Committee on Election Integrity and the Economic Development & Tourism, Governmental Affairs, Higher Education and Small Business Development committees.
