ATLANTA – Members of the Georgia Working Families Legislative Caucus leadership praise the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers (BCTGM) International Union for their efforts to improve working conditions at Kellogg’s facilities across the country. The BCTGM members who work at several Kellogg’s facilities recently voted to accept the recommended collective bargaining agreement, which ends a nearly three-month long strike.
“Workers throughout the U.S. have been very supportive of the BCTGM employees for sticking together and standing their ground on getting a fair contract for them and their families,” said State Representative Dewey McClain (D-Lawrenceville), co-chair, Georgia Working Families Legislative Caucus. “This is really big news for workers everywhere.”
“Kellogg workers united to win a union contract with no concessions – a contract that improves benefits and job security for their families,” said State Senator Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta), co-chair, Georgia Working Families Legislative Caucus. “This victory gives us hope for a brighter new year!”
“When workers stand together and speak up, change happens,” said State Representative Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta). “The voice and action of the BCTGM employees now creates a pathway for others to advocate for themselves, families and colleagues. It’s time contracts align with the needs of the working class. This was a game changer.”
The new five-year agreement does not include any concessions. Highlights of the new agreement include: no permanent two-tier system, clear path to regular full-time employment, moratorium that prohibits plant shut downs through October 2026, significant increase in the pension multiplier and maintenance of cost of living raises. Approval of the contract ends the BCTGM’s strike against Kellogg’s, which began on October 5, 2021.
This collective bargaining agreement will go into effect for approximately 1,400 workers at Kellogg’s facilities in Battle Creek, Michigan; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Omaha, Nebraska; and Memphis, Tennessee.
Statements from BCTGM leadership regarding the new agreement can be found here.
