ATLANTA – State Representative Eric Bell (D-Jonesboro) will host an “Epilepsy Train-A-Thon” event to raise awareness about epilepsy and equip participants with skills on seizure first aid on Thursday, March 28, 2024, from 11 a.m.- 5 p.m., at S. Truett Cathy Professional Learning Center in Clayton County.
“The Epilepsy-Train-A-Thon seeks to bridge the gap by providing comprehensive training to participants, ensuring they are well-prepared to assist individuals experiencing seizures in their schools and communities,” said Rep. Bell. “Participants will undergo hands-on training exercises and simulations to reinforce their learning and build confidence in their ability to respond effectively to seizure emergencies. Through events like the Epilepsy Train-A-Thon, we can equip individuals with the knowledge and skills needed to support those living with epilepsy and promote inclusivity and understanding.”
“Senate Bill 45, AJ’s Law, ensures students in Georgia receive care for epilepsy or a seizure disorder while attending school,” said Aly Clift, Executive Director of the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia. “It allows physicians and parents of a child being treated for a seizure disorder to provide schools with a seizure action plan.”
“At 14, when I was diagnosed with epilepsy, I had no idea that one day I would be able to use those life experiences to impact the next generation of students,” said AJ Taylor. “AJ’s law makes sure that kids and families with epilepsy disorders do not have to wonder who will have their back. With education we can beat the fear and stigma together.”
The train-a-thon represents a partnership between the Epilepsy Foundation of Georgia, the Student Emergency Assistance nonprofit and Morehouse School of Medicine Epilepsy Board and will take place two days after the annual “Purple Day.” The event will feature guest speaker AJ Taylor, who Governor Kemp named “AJ’s Law” after.
The event is free and open to individuals of all backgrounds and experience levels, such as school personnel. Upon completion of the training, participants will receive certification in Seizure First Aid.
