Rep. Rick Townsend Appointed to State’s Water Council by House Speaker Jon Burns  

ATLANTA – State Representative Rick Townsend (R-Brunswick) was recently appointed by Speaker Jon Burns (R-Newington) to serve as a member on the Georgia Water Council. The Georgia Water Council is tasked with ensuring coordination, cooperation and communication among state agencies and their water-related efforts in the development of a comprehensive state-wide water management plan in coordination with the Georgia General Assembly and other state agencies. 

“I am thankful to Speaker Burns for appointing me to serve on the state’s Water Council,” said Rep. Townsend. “As a resident of one of Georgia’s coastal communities, I am especially passionate about protecting our state’s natural resources and ensuring sound and sustainable water policy. Water is one of our most critical resources, and I am honored to help shape policies that will safeguard Georgia’s water supply for generations to come.”

The Water Council is a coordinating committee created by the Comprehensive Statewide Water Management Planning Act and is comprised of members of the Georgia General Assembly and other state departments appointed by the Speaker of the House and the President Pro Tempore of the Senate. The council is also tasked with providing input to the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources concerning development of the water plan, reviewing and approving the final draft of the proposed plan and recommending such proposed plan for consideration by the General Assembly.

Representative Rick Townsend represents the citizens of District 179, which includes a portion of Glynn County. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2022 and currently serves as Secretary of the Natural Resources & Environment Committee. He also serves on the Economic Development & Tourism, Education and Judiciary, Juvenile committees.
