Rep. Morgan Joins Legendary Civil Rights Leaders Honoring the Matriarch of the Voting Rights Movement

ATLANTA – State Representative Alisha Morgan (D-Austell) will join several leading female activists in a panel discussion on Saturday, August 20th during the “Reclaiming the Gift” Centennial Birthday Celebration honoring Dr. Amelia Boynton Robinson, the “Matriarch of the Voting Rights Movement.”

“I’m honored to be on this panel with such legendary women of both yesterday and today’s movements,” said Rep. Morgan. “I stand on the shoulders of Dr. Boynton Williams and women like Evelyn Lowery for the many sacrifices they have made. Too often, the role women have played in movements has been understated and this is a great opportunity to honor the work and legacy of Dr. Boynton Robinson and the many other nameless women who have helped shape America.”

The full day event will include a series of six panel discussions that will lead up to the night’s Centennial Birthday Celebration. Each discussion will last one hour and will focus on a variety of specific aspects of the Voting Rights Movement. The series will begin at 9:00 AM with a discussion titled “Foundations of The Movement: How It All Began.”

Rep. Morgan will join legendary female activists in a discussion titled “Unsung S/Heroes: Women of The Movement” during the day’s second panel session. Beginning at 10:15 AM, this discussion will be led by Ms. Catrena Norris Carter and will also include Evelyn Lowery, Founder and Chair of SCLC Women, and Elisabeth Williams Omilami, CEO of Hosea Feed the Hungry.

Other featured panelists at tomorrow’s festivities will include Ambassador Andrew Young, Congressman John Lewis, Dr. Bernard LaFayette, Dick Gregory and many others. The celebration will conclude with a grand reception filled with special tributes from Dr. Boynton Robinson’s close friends and family as well as Rev. Jesse Jackson, Dr. Barbara Williams Emerson, and Monica Pearson.
