ATLANTA – State Representative Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) today announced her plans to launch the “Got You Covered, Period” initiative to end period poverty in Georgia.
“In the U.S., 25 million women live in poverty, but food stamps don’t cover menstrual products,” said Rep. Schofield. “In our home state of Georgia, women are being forced to use other items like newspapers, toilet paper, socks and even plastic bags. A quarter of U.S. students struggle to access period products as COVID-19 exacerbated the gap. Three in five students say they rarely or never find free period products in school bathrooms or public bathrooms. The ‘pink tax’ is inhumane and monetarily punishes women for being women.”
Rep. Schofield will collaborate with advocates, victims of period poverty and women across this state, the U.S. and other countries. Through the “Got You Covered, Period” initiative, Rep. Schofield seeks to destigmatize menstruation, make menstrual products accessible, advocate for the end of the “pink tax,” and provide education to young girls on the topic of menstruation.
Representative Kim Schofield represents the citizens of District 60, which includes portions of Clayton and Fulton counties. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2017 and currently serves on the Health & Human Services, Interstate Cooperation, Information and Audits and Small Business Development committees.
