Cobb County Legislative Delegation Holds Meeting on School Safety Plans for COVID-19

ATLANTA – The Cobb County Legislative Delegation, chaired by State Representative David Wilkerson (D-Powder Springs), recently held a meeting with local and state agencies to discuss school safety plans regarding COVID-19, more commonly known as “coronavirus,” on Monday, March 9, 2020.

“On behalf of the delegation, I want to extend my gratitude to Kennesaw State University, Marietta City Schools and the Cobb County School District for their attendance,” said Rep. Wilkerson. “Amid Fulton County Schools being closed on Wednesday, March 11, I am encouraged by the rapid and proactive response of Atlanta Public Schools on March 9 to cancel all sponsored field trips to international and out of state locations. We are assured that the Cobb County school systems will be equally prepared to mitigate any challenges.”

During the meeting, members of the delegation worked to streamline communication, prioritize community preparedness and better understand proactive measures being taken to ensure student safety in Cobb County. Rep. Wilkerson also requested that the school systems in attendance temporarily suspend all international travel over spring break, as well as temporarily suspend attendance awards and any consequences towards student absences regarding exams.

“I understand that the school systems represented by the delegation are reliant upon the Cobb County Department of Health (CCDPH),” continued Rep. Wilkerson. “I look forward to receiving more information from the CCDPH regarding plans for community and student safety in the event that an outbreak occurs.”

Additionally, on Tuesday, March 10, 2020, Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge), announced several actions to limit the potential for exposure or transmission of the virus while the Georgia House of Representatives conducts essential business.

“As the state begins to take precautions, this is a further reason the Cobb County Delegation wishes to prioritize effective communication between agencies servicing its constituents,” added Rep. Wilkerson.

Representative David Wilkerson represents the citizens of District 38, which includes portions of Cobb County. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2010 and currently serves on the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Oversight, Juvenile Justice, Retirement and Science and Technology committees.
