ATLANTA – Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) was re-elected by his colleagues in the Georgia House of Representatives to continue his service as Speaker of the House for the 2021-2022 legislative session. Ralston has served as Speaker since 2010 and is Georgia’s 73rd Speaker of the House.
“I thank my colleagues in the House for their continued trust and confidence,” said Speaker Ralston. “Our government is at its best when it is working for our people – when we address fundamental issues that make people’s lives better. This year, we will prioritize reforming Georgia’s citizen’s arrest law, improving and expanding our mental health care system and ensuring our freight network continues to grow to expand economic opportunity.”
The Speaker of the House of Representatives serves as the presiding officer of the legislative body. He is responsible for determining the leadership and membership of House committees. While the House is in session, the Speaker is charged with assigning legislation to committees, calling legislation for debate, and enforcing the rules of the House.
“I am so very proud of the work we have accomplished together over the last decade to lower taxes on families, expand our rights under the Second Amendment, reform our criminal justice system and help children awaiting adoption find permanent, loving homes,” said Speaker Ralston. “It is my hope and intent to continue to bring our House members together and keep our state moving forward.”
Speaker Ralston represents Georgia’s 7th House District which includes Fannin and Gilmer counties as well as a portion of Dawson County.
