ATLANTA – State Representatives Viola Davis (D-Stone Mountain), Rhonda Burnough (D-Burnough), Kim Schofield (D-Atlanta) and Sandra Scott (D-Rex) today expressed their gratitude for Georgia’s labor unions ahead of the Labor Day weekend.
“Labor Day is a celebration for the many sacrifices teachers make in educating students, nurses make in providing care for patients, soldiers make in protecting us all against enemies, both foreign and domestic, and essential workers for providing services to maintain everyday living and security,” said Rep. Davis. “We appreciate the sacrifices of Georgia’s many workers, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
“As we celebrate Labor Day, we honor the men and women who fought tirelessly and continue fighting for workers’ rights and livable wages and value those whose labor is immeasurable,” said Rep. Schofield. “Let’s never forget that all wealth is a product of someone’s labor.”
Reps. Burnough, Davis, Schofield and Scott seek to provide a special commendation and appreciation to Georgia workers and labor unions for their sacrifices throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, these legislators have worked since the start of the pandemic to help Georgians who are unemployed by advocating for eligible Georgians to receive their Unemployment Insurance benefits. These legislators have worked with labor unions, participated in protests, held press conferences, filed a Writ of Mandamus and House legislation and wrote letters to Georgia’s congressional delegation for support.
“It has been a labor of love to fight for your rights,” said Rep. Burnough. “I value your contribution to making Georgia work.”
“I commend the labor unions throughout Georgia for your love and concern for your people,” said Rep. Scott. “Thanks to the people of Georgia for all the sacrifices you have made during this time.”
Celebrated on the first Monday of each September, Labor Day was originally established to honor the social and economic achievements of American workers and their contributions to the country’s welfare and prosperity. Labor Day was first recognized as a federal holiday in 1894.
