Dougherty County Delegation Presented with $3 Million Check for College and Career Academy

ATLANTA – State Representative Darrel Ealum (D-Albany) today commented on the grant funding of $3.4 million from the Technical College System of Georgia for the Commodore Conyers College and Career Academy. The check for the funds was presented by Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle to representatives from Dougherty County during a ceremony at the State Capitol on Tuesday, March 8. Representative from Dougherty County in attendance for the presentation were Dougherty County School Superintendent Dr. David “Butch” Mosely, Albany Technical College President Dr. Anthony Parker, and Dougherty County delegation members including: Reps. Ealum, Winfred Dukes (D-Albany), Gerald Greene (R-Cuthbert), and Sen. Freddie Powell Sims (D-Dawson).

“This is a great day for Dougherty County and all of Southwest Georgia,” said Rep. Ealum. “This grant will provide the much-needed funding to begin work on the approved college and career academy for our area, and we are so grateful to the Lt. Governor and his staff for their continued willingness to work with us and support this important initiative.”

“The creation of this new College and Career Academy wouldn’t have been possible without Rep. Ealum’s dedication and commitment to innovative education policies,” said Lt. Governor Casey Cagle. “Albany will undoubtedly benefit from this world-class learning facility that allows our students to follow an education track built just for them, one that empowers Georgia’s young people to thrive in this modern, 21st Century job market.”

The Commodore Conyers College and Career Academy was approved by the state Board of Education in December of 2015 and will open beginning for the fall semester of 2016. The Commodore Conyers CCA curriculum will mirror Governor Nathan Deal’s High Demand Career Initiatives while focusing on local industry needs, including agriculture, healthcare, defense, logistics, information technology, aerospace, automotive manufacturing, and manufacturing.
