Georgia General Assembly Announces the Addition of a Lactation Pod in the State Capitol

ATLANTA (September 30, 2019) | Senate President Pro Tempore Butch Miller (R – Gainesville), House of Representatives Speaker David Ralston (R – Blue Ridge) and House Speaker Pro-Tempore Jan Jones (R-Milton) announced today that a new lactation pod will be located in the State Capitol. The pod, made by Mamava, will allow mothers a private and sanitary place to nurse or pump. Mamava is a female-owned company headquartered in Vermont that manufactures all of its lactation pods in America.

“We are proud to announce that this much needed addition is coming to the Capitol,” said Sen. Miller. “I want to thank everyone who worked on securing the pod so that any women working in or visiting our Capitol have a private space to care for their children. Although this is a step in the right direction to modernize the Capitol and ensure women have access to facilities they need, we will continue to make any necessary improvements in the future.”

“Much like the House’s new family leave policy, this new resource demonstrates our commitment to our employees and their families,” said Speaker Ralston. “I appreciate the collaborative effort between the House and Senate to provide a comfortable, private space for mothers.”

“The Lactation Pod is an important step forward in supporting women with infants who work or have business at the Capitol.  It will provide a comfortable and clean place for mothers to nurse and pump,” said Speaker Pro-Tempore Jan Jones.  “I’m proud the General Assembly makes healthy children and mothers a priority, even when space is tight in our 130 year old beautiful Capitol building.”

The pod’s access is controlled by an app – Smart Access with Mamava App – and is secure from the inside. Some of the features include two benches, multiple outlets and USB ports, ceiling fans and occupancy-activated lighting. Although the pod is primarily intended for the needs of employees, members of the public are invited to use the pod as well.
