Georgia House of Representatives Passes Legislation to Give Local School Systems Flexibility

ATLANTA — The Georgia House of Representatives today passed House Bill 936 by a vote of 160-1. Sponsored by state Representative Paul Battles (R-Cartersville), HB 936 allows school systems to use their replacement allowance for purchasing new school buses towards the refurbishment of existing school buses.

“I’m honored that my first piece of legislation to pass the House is one that allows local school systems to take necessary steps to save much-needed money during these tough economic times,” said Representative Battles. “It only makes sense to repair an existing school bus rather than buy a new one, as long as the repair is a safe alternative. Saving taxpayer dollars like this will help school systems adapt to budget cuts without laying off teachers or requiring additional furlough days.”

Co-sponsors of HB 936 include state Representatives Ed Rynders (R-Leesburg), Jay Roberts (R-Ocilla), Brooks Coleman (R-Duluth), Howard Maxwell (R-Dallas), and Mark Hamilton (R-Cumming).
HB 936 has been sent to the Senate for consideration. For more information on the bill, please click here.
