Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Issues Statement on Federal Judicial Ruling on Purging Georgia Voter Registry

ATLANTA – The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC), chaired by State Representative Karen Bennett (D-Stone Mountain), today issued the following statement in response to the recent ruling by U.S. District Judge Steve Jones to uphold the purge of more than 300,000 voters from the state’s voter registry:

“As a caucus, we respect the judicial process and rule of law; however, as it pertains to the decision rendered by U.S. District Judge Steve Jones, we vehemently disagree. Since 2017, the state of Georgia has aggressively used its ‘use it or lose it’ policy to remove more than 800,000 voters from the rolls. The application of this policy has led to thousands of citizens being politically silenced simply because they chose not to exercise their constitutional right. We urge voters to regularly check their registration status and to actively participate in the electoral process. Voting is the greatest way to protect our voice, and more importantly, protect our democracy.”

Established in 1975, the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus is a 501(c)3 non-profit, nonpartisan organization comprised of 65 Georgia House and Senate members.
