ATLANTA – State Representative Valencia Stovall (D-Forest Park) announced that Governor Nathan Deal signed House Resolution 279 on Monday, May 7, 2018. HR 279, which Rep. “As a single parent, it was difficult at times to raise two responsible children in today’s society,” said Rep. Stovall. “Dependable, up-to-date resources were not readily accessible, which resulted in many years of frustration. This resolution recognizes the need for resources for single parents and moves towards action by opening the door for partnerships with local, federal and state agencies, nonprofits, policy makers and businesses. The dedication and achievements of single parents, regardless of their gender, cultural diversity or economic status, deserve to be recognized.”

“I’d like to thank the resolution’s co-signers, my House and Senate colleagues, Gov. Deal and my family for their support,” added Rep. Stovall. “Additionally, I’d like to recognize the National Leadership Group, Inc., REAL Parents, Inc., Total Teen Icons, DeKalb Initiative for Children and Families, Inc., International Church Ushers of Georgia, Stroman Enterprises and DeKalb County Commissioner Larry Johnson for their diligent advocacy on behalf of all of the single parents in Georgia.”

In 1984, the United States Congress passed House Joint Resolution 200, which designated March 21, 1984, as National Single Parent Day. This resolution was in conjunction with Proclamation 5166 issued by President Ronald Reagan, which also designated March 21, 1984, as National Single Parent Day.
