ATLANTA — The Georgia House of Representatives today passed House Bill 1144 by a vote of 118-34. Sponsored by Representative Mary Margaret Oliver (D-Decatur), HB 1144 allows juveniles to receive credit for time served while being held in detention. Under current law, adults receive such credit, but juveniles do not.
“We have a responsibility to make this procedure more fair and efficient. Juveniles should get credit for the time they have already served in detention, just like adult offenders do,” said Representative Oliver. “This bill also saves the state money in a time when we are looking for every available dime.”
Bill co-sponsors include Representatives Edward Lindsey (R- Atlanta), Matt Ramsey (R-Peachtree City), and Wendell Willard (R- Sandy Springs).
HB 1144 now goes to the Senate for consideration. A link to the bill can be found by clicking here.
