House Passes Rep. Atwood’s Legislation on Local Government Finances

ATLANTA – State Representative Alex Atwood (R-St. Simons Island) today commented on House Bill 851, legislation requiring county law libraries to conduct annual audits of their financial records. HB 851 unanimously passed the Georgia House of Representatives on Tuesday, February 23 and will now be considered by the Senate.

“Every county in Georgia collects fees that are assessed for citizen law libraries, but currently, our state does not have a law in place to require an annual audit in each county to determine how the fees are being spent,” said Rep. Atwood. “With these annual audits, local governments will have a better grasp on their financial situation and be able to address their issues moving forward.”

HB 851 requires county law libraries to have annual audits of their financial affairs, books, and records of boards of trustees by the county accountant, internal auditor, or a certified public accountant. The bill further calls for a report of the findings to be made available to both the governing body and the public.
