Lowndes County Legislative Delegation Announces Expansion of Lowndes County Board of Commissioners

ATLANTA – The Lowndes County Legislative Delegation today announced the expansion of the Lowndes County Commission through the passage of Senate Bill 16. Governor Nathan Deal signed the legislation into law on Tuesday, March 15, 2011.

“As our community grows and becomes a center for South Georgia business, our county commission must also grow to better meet the needs of our growing and changing population,” said Rep. Ellis Black. “This plan is fair and equitable to all the divisions of Lowndes County.”

“I am proud to be a part of the signing of SB 16 by Governor Nathan Deal,” said Rep. Carter. “With the outstanding growth of Lowndes County, more representation is necessary to strengthen the voices and concerns of all members of our thriving community.”

“I am confident that this expansion will help the Board of Commissioners better serve our growing population, and I am happy that Governor Deal was so willing to sign the bill into law as quickly as he did,” said Rep. Jason Shaw.

“I appreciate Governor Deal signing SB 16 so quickly for us,” said Sen. Golden.

Introduced by Senator Tim Golden (R-Valdosta) and carried in the House by Rep. Carter, SB 16 effectively expands the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners in order to continue to provide responsive and efficient local government to citizens in the Lowndes community. Specifically, SB 16 would maintain the three existing commissioner districts while adding two new overlay districts, for a total of five county commissioners. In addition to these five voting commissioners, the board will continue to be led by a non-voting commission chairman.
