Newt Gingrich Announces Support for Spaceport Camden

ATLANTA – State Representative Jason Spencer (R-Woodbine) today announced that former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich recently offered his support for the creation of Spaceport Camden, a launch site and spaceport in Camden County, Georgia.  Rep. Spencer was the author of House Bill 734, the Georgia Spaceflight Act, during the 2016 legislative session that was designed to lay the groundwork for procedures for spaceflight activity in Georgia, as well as introduce industry standards used in other “space friendly” states.

“I am honored that Speaker Gingrich sees the wonderful opportunity that this project will have on the entire commercial space industry in Georgia,” said Rep. Spencer. “Newt has been involved in space policy for many years and to get his endorsement on this project speaks volumes.  It is wonderful to get Georgia leaders on board for this project.”

In a letter to the Camden County Board of Commissioners, Newt Gingrich wrote:

“While in Congress, it was my distinct pleasure to work with the nascent commercial space industry on favorable legal structures and regulatory practices to promote the growth of this incredibly important industry.

“I have always believe that Georgia should actively pursue today’s $300+ billion commercial space industry, including by promoting a coastal-area site for launching satellites and humans on commercial missions. I congratulate you on the leadership you have shown by taking this initial step to establish Spaceport Camden.”

The proposed Spaceport Camden site is located on the I-95 corridor next to the Atlantic Ocean. The proposed site would provide a nearly unrestricted launch range for the launch of spacecraft to a wide range of orbits.
