Rep. Alan Powell Receives NRA Defender of Freedom Award

ATLANTA— State Representative Alan Powell (R-Hartwell) was recently recognized by the National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action with the Defender of Freedom Award. The Defender of Freedom Award is designated for a select few legislators whom the NRA believes to be true advocates for Second Amendment rights.

“Protecting Second Amendment rights is a responsibility and a duty that I take very seriously as a state legislator and as an American,” said Rep. Powell. “I was proud to work on HB 60 during the 2014 session, and am even more proud that our legislative body also saw the importance enough in the bill for it to pass. I am honored that the NRA recognized my efforts by awarding me with this esteemed honor.”

Rep. Powell was selected for the award based on his strong support and leadership in the passage of House Bill 60, otherwise known as The Safe Carry Act. HB 60 primarily seeks to protect the second amendment rights of citizens and allows licensed weapons holders to carry their firearms in more places in Georgia than previously allowed by state law. Passed by the Georgia General Assembly and signed by Governor Deal in spring of 2014, the law became effective on July 1, 2014.

Rep. Powell has also been recognized with an “A+” rating by the NRA Political Victory Fund in the 2014 general election.

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America’s oldest civil rights and sportsmen’s group. More than five million members strong, the NRA strives to uphold the Second Amendment and advocates enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The NRA also provides firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the armed services.
