Rep. Angelika Kausche Responds to Autrey Mill Middle School Incident

ATLANTA – In response to the recent incident at the Multicultural Night at Autrey Mill Middle School in Johns Creek on Thursday, March 7, State Representative Angelika Kausche (D-Johns Creek) today issued the following statement:

“I am proud to represent the residents of Johns Creek, a community that prides itself in diversity and inclusion. I was recently made aware of an incident at Autrey Mill Middle School where a map that predated the creation of Israel was displayed at a multicultural night celebration.

“Johns Creek has some of the best schools in the state and indeed, the country. And I believe our educators do everything in their power to teach current and factual lessons. Consequently, I trust our schools to continue to present internationally recognized boundaries of countries to students. The conversation around the conflict in the Middle East is often heavy, and as with any emotionally-charged conversation, proper context is imperative. A middle school’s multicultural night is neither the right time nor place to adequately address the history, complexity, and nuances of the conversation — which is why I applaud Autrey Mill Middle School and Principal Martin on their response, committing to both inclusion and unity.

“Our community is strengthened by our diversity, and we all actively root for each other’s success. I have no doubt in my mind that this incident can be a learning experience and serve as an opportunity for us to demonstrate our unity through diversity.”

Representative Angelika Kausche represents the citizens of District 50, which includes portions of Fulton County. She was elected to the House of Representatives in 2018 and currently serves on the Higher Education, Natural Resources & Environment and Small Business committees.
