Rep. Barbara Sims Will Not Seek Re-election

ATLANTA – State Representative Barbara Sims (R-Augusta) announced today that she will not seek re-election to the Georgia House of Representatives. She will continue to serve the remainder of her current term in office which will expire in January 2017.

“Serving the citizens of Augusta/Richmond and Columbia counties has been an honor. I will continue to keep their best interests at heart as I conclude my time in the House,” said Representative Sims. “I am proud of what we have accomplished in continuing to make Georgia a better place for our children and grandchildren.”

Speaker of the House David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) offered his praise for Rep. Sims’ service. “Representative Barbara Sims has been an invaluable member of the House and our Republican majority caucus,” said Speaker David Ralston. “She has shown the courage and the wisdom to do what is best for Georgia, and I thank her for her continued service to the citizens of her district and our entire state. Her character and integrity reflect the highest ideals of public service.”

Representative Sims was sworn into the Georgia House of Representatives in January of 2007 and represents House district 123 which includes sections of Augusta/Richmond and Columbia counties.

Representative Sims is Chairman of the State Properties Committee and Secretary of the Economic Development and Tourism Committee. She also serves on the Appropriations, Rules, Transportation, Health and Human Services and Science and Technology Committees.

Representative Sims previously served as a Commissioner for Augusta/Richmond County.

She has been active in the community for many years serving on various boards. She continues to serve as a member of the Medical College of Georgia Foundation Board and the Augusta State University Foundation Board.

Representative Sims attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton ,Va., but came home to Georgia and graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.  She was married for 47 years to her late husband, Fred, who was a dentist with practices in Augusta and Wadley.  Representative Sims has two sons and four grandchildren with whom she looks forward to spending more time.
