Rep. Broadrick Commends Whitfield County Businesses for Successful Year of Trade

ATLANTA – State Representative Bruce Broadrick (R-Dalton) today commended Whitfield County businesses for a successful year of trade and commerce following the release of Fiscal Year 2016 cargo data distributed by the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA).

“I applaud Whitfield County’s business community for an abundant year of trade through the ports of Savannah and Brunswick,” said Rep. Broadrick. “Many of our community’s leading companies have moved massive amounts of cargo containing a variety of valuable commodities into and out of the state this past year, and I’m proud of Whitfield County’s great contributions in maintaining Georgia’s reputation as the No. 1 state in the country for business.”

According to cargo data collected by the U.S. Commerce Department via the Port Import Export Reporting Service, Whitfield County exported 1,033 Twenty-foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) and imported 12,897 TEUs during Fiscal Year 2016 at Brunswick and Savannah’s public and private terminals. A TEU is a unit commonly used within the maritime and transport industries to describe and measure a cargo container’s size and carrying capacity.

GPA and Georgia’s deepwater ports and inland barge terminals, including the ports of Savannah and Brunswick, employ more than 369,000 personnel statewide and annually generate $84.1 billion in revenue, $20.4 billion in income and $2.3 billion in state and local taxes. GPA’s ports and terminals serve as international trade gateways for the United States’ agriculture and production industries.
