Rep. Calvin Smyre Appointed to House Study Committee on Base Realignment and Closure

ATLANTA – House Speaker David Ralston (R-Blue Ridge) recently appointed State Representative Calvin Smyre (D-Columbus) to the House Study Committee on Base Realignment and Closure.

“I want to thank Speaker Ralston for appointing me to this crucial committee for Georgia and our citizens,” said Rep. Smyre. “For more than 40 years I have had the privilege and honor of representing constituents from Fort Benning, and I understand firsthand the economic impact that our military bases have on our communities and throughout the state. I look forward to working with my colleagues to prepare Georgia for any future BRAC commission meetings to ensure the retention of our bases statewide.”

This fifteen member study committee, Chaired by State Representative Dave Belton (R-Buckhead), is established by House Resolution 1135 and will examine how to protect Georgia’s military installations from a future federal base realignment and closure action.
